I went to the mall this weekend with my daughters, who have reached the age where going to the mall is kinda fun actually, and there's still a '90s-era music/movie store where you can buy the new Taylor Swift album on vinyl for $58.99. Don't ever change, mall.

Looks like I picked the right year to accept that my despair and outrage have no meaningful effect on the real world.

This world is stupid in so many ways, obviously, but right now none seems stupider to me than the fact that every single day I stumble on another crowdfunding effort to cover the medical expenses of a sick or injured American.

I just booked another trip to TIFF, despite it feeling mostly like work last year. Let's be honest, I'm going so I can eat Chinese and Korean food with friends.

I've just begun making my way through Eric Hobsbawm's histories, starting with the rise of the British industrial revolution, and I'm beginning to suspect that the small minority of people who control the vast majority of wealth, power, and privilege will always bend rules to maintain that control.

I’ve walked 104 miles since arriving at the beach 13 days ago.

I've been listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo during my beach walks this week. (I read all three novels during a beach trip a couple years ago.) I think it's a rich text, actually--a portrait of late capitalism, fascism (past and present), violence against women as an expression of power...

If, like me, you're weirdly fascinated by those self-help, "rise and grind" Alpha dudes on social media, you might enjoy this article. The writer seems to have approached the story with one idea ("What's going on at my local coffee shop?") and stumbled upon a genuine charlatan.

Today is day 8 of my beach vacation and I’m a little bored, which is the point of taking a two-week vacation. I can feel my body and brain slowing down, which hasn’t happened in years.

FYI, the Vols are in the three-game championship series for the first time since 1951, so baseball is good. If they lose, baseball will be bad again, obviously.
I only care about baseball when the Vols are in the postseason, and I don’t know how y’all can do this for months at a time. This game is so boring and so stressful. It’s beautiful but I’ve got enough anxiety in my life.

I just stumbled on that video of a cop rocketing out of a playground slide on his face. Hadn’t seen it for a while. Still funny.

I’m part of a very specific generation of cinephiles who grew up reading a library copy of Hitchcock/Truffaut, memorizing every plot and b&w still, with zero hope of ever seeing more than 7 or 8 of the films.
i hate to have one of these at all but my big "WE DRANK FROM THE HOSE" opinion is that people younger than millennials really can't imagine what coming of age in a time of media scarcity meant - like, I would read about records and movies and not actually be able to see them for YEARS

You probably thought the perfect Father’s Day picture didn’t exist.

I watched the first hour of BRATS last night. It took a while for me to figure out who 60yo Andrew McCarthy reminded me of. And it was … Harry Dean Stanton?

I just turned on my automated reply, notifying colleagues that I won't be answering work emails until July 1. I'm the happiest person in this godforsaken country right now.

Resigning myself to the fact that no new cinema will ever excite me as much that first night of Twin Peaks: The Return, when four episodes dropped.

Next Saturday I leave for two weeks at the beach, a decadent vacation I justify by having worked long hours for six months straight. I plan to walk a hundred miles on the beach, nap often, and read. Anyway, what’s the novel you wish you could read again for the first time?

I'm listening to David Bazan's new record, and this series of albums he's making is the most Enneagram 4 thing imaginable. Even I, an off-the-charts Enneagram 4, am like "It's gonna be okay, Dave. We like you. We really do."

Got a sudden idea last night for a book that would also be a good dissertation. It's been almost 20 years since I felt that itch.

You ever open up YouTube and start watching PJ Harvey live videos and suddenly it's 2 AM and the next morning you're tired at work and simmering with regret for never having seen her in concert? Ever do that? Anyway, this lineup with Josh Klinghoffer is insane. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDkj...
