Tomorrow is the fourth. If America weren't great, we wouldn't care about keeping it. I love that our country is truly multiracial, all of us have "American" names, we care a lot less about class than other countries (in my work, this means lots of 1st gen students indistinguishable from the rest)

I love that we give states personalities (except all you square ones and also new england has one), universities are the best in the world, everyone brands themselves with sports, colleges, etc to invite conversation (I see you cis men, even if I don't get you)

I love that we don't have a monarchy and don't tolerate titles, we believe in American exceptionalism but in a we can all be free way, women are more equal here than almost anywhere else (few European countries hold a candle), we welcome all religions and none (we homegrow weirdo religions)

There are so many reasons to love the United States. This beautiful, complicated place is flawed, but it's ours. At least for now. And tomorrow, that's worth celebrating

As a member of one of those homegrown weirdo religions, I appreciate and endorse this message.

It makes me sad. We had a country of stone cold weirdos with weirdo religions of every kind. So many different sects—some once required things like pacifism, were antislavery. Many were born of dissent from the British monarchy and collective power—now most got homogenized under a fascist umbrella

We had very few religions at the founding. And they were mostly controlling assholes. There were laws that disabled minority religions from juries and beyond. Now we let all flowers bloom. We invented tons of religions! We have to fight to keep that. But we're much better situated today than then

I was speaking primarily of the proliferation of Christian sects, many of which were pretty wild and radical for the time. I don’t know if this list is complete but I wonder if any country has produced this many sects and faiths in such a short time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

"new england has one" 6 million people outside of MA now upset you basically just called them Mass-holes

(well, not the ones in providence, they know that's what they are no matter where the state border falls)

I am pretty sure Noah Kahan has taught all the US that it's massholes all the way to the border. One personality (seasonal affective disorder)

And self medicated with alcohol.

since I don't know who that is, imma just assume its the Mexican border! I'd put New England's petty, outsider-suspicious micro-regionalism up there with the best of 'em, Old England's. Perhaps annoyed by & suspicious of anyone from more than an hour's drive away IS the unifying personality?

Noah Kahan is the bard of the region (and also a newly tremendously successful singer). Excellent lyrics conveying a sense of place (I went to college in Boston so I have some minor, anthropological view)

I'm super proud to be from the Lone Star State, which was named for our rating on Yelp!
