Princess Ai has been naught but a joke for those old enough to remember when Tokyopop tried to turn it into their own homegrown franchise. Is there any artistic value to be found it now, 20 years after its debut?
Review: PRINCESS AImangatestdrive.blogspot.com I know some might fuss over including this title here, considering its reputation and the fact that it was so closely tied to Tokyopop's co...

I thought Bizenghast ended up being the main homegrown franchise for TokyoPop; it certainly was the OEL that sold the most at the shop I worked at! Disco Stu's creative attempts were always slightly off, as I recall.

Yeah, but AFAIK Stu never tried to turn Bizenghast into an anime, a concept album (complete with "motion comic" music videos, a bunch of sequels/spinoffs, and an absolutely wretched book of poetry for it. The sad thing is that this is probably the BEST thing Disco Stu did as DJ Milky.

the saddest was when it showed up in the Sunday Comics, like the newspaper? nestled between Stone Soup and Garfield for a few weeks!

oh wait! no! the other sad attempt at making Ai a thing waa having her appear in other Tokyopop series!! i recall back on LJ, one of the artists posted a preview chapter, she drew buncha her friends into it

That was the prequel, which sure was Babby's First Webcomic in newspaper form. May I ask what paper you read it in? As far as I've been able to find out, its distribution was very limited.

Boston Globe here it wasn't even a good webcomic, as it didn't really format like one (like when a story starts/stops to read like a chapter but also interest u in coming back)

Dunno if it's a typo, but character design was by Ai Yazawa, not Nozawa.

It is a typo and an embarrassing one since I spelled it right later in the review. Fixed.
