I do data visualization and user-centered design of health information, I ride bicycles, I think about chronic diseases, I make dumb jokes, and I try to stay off the internet.

16-17 years ago. but the best story is the guy who ordered from outside the delivery zone - a $20 surcharge. he ordered the salmon but "didn't want anything on it." I heard the expo clarify - "nothing on it? not even the oil we cook with?" Nope - nothing on it.

I love how congestion pricing was suspended over equity concerns and now we're at "holding poor kids with asthma hostage so that cops can get free stuff"

early in my career i rolled my eyes at the stance of coworkers who felt that you couldn't really understand data unless you understand everything about how it's collected and all its limitations, etc. (i felt their stance on knowledge creation was gatekeeping and they undersold the knowledge)...
I'm a quant guy and I live by quant data, but quant data is fucking useless without a serious body of theory to inform the construction of measures and the interpretation of the resulting data

You may have seen some coverage about how much the track bikes used in the Olympics 'cost'- like how the one used by Japan costs like $140,000. But that's not what they really cost, and here's why - www.bikeradar.com/news/2024-ol...

I go to the office 3 days per week and the past few months, there's been one reasonably major subway clusterfuck about every 2 weeks. That's ~1 out of 12 commutes twice as long because of line down, re-routing, trees on the tracks, etc. Feels like a big change in the MTA, and very frustrating.

So, do we think that the peaches from the peach tree in my Brooklyn neighborhood are going to be edible, or, what?

My "solidarity with all people on bikes" stance is really tested by the guy hauling one up the subway stairs during rush hour, bumping me and telling me to get out of his way

I did not wind up wearing shorts to the office, but I did tell people that I think it's OK to wear shorts to the office when the weather is literally deadly.
Planning to take the bold stance of wearing shorts to the office later on this week to deal with the heat, because fer godsake 'professional' dress shouldn't mean severe weather-related discomfort

One of the most amazing websites in the whole world is the NYC DCAS public surplus auction website. Where else can you shop for such gems as 100 rowboats, 2 broken tables, "3 broken paper organizers (knife stuck inside), or a staten island ferry??? www.publicsurplus.com/sms/nycdcas,...

something particularly unpleasant about the movie shoot setting up its craft services literally right outside the shelter where unhoused people wait all day for the chance to sleep with a roof over their head

Could you imagine being an adult grown-up columnist who's just absolutely obsessed with what college kids are going? Who just absolutely can't let go of it and feels the need to pick it apart constantly?

i find it highly disorienting when people refer to the GWB simply as the Washington Bridge.

so many people i know were radicalized simply because they tried to do a free speech and were met with unprovoked, overwhelming, unaccountable police violence.
it’s weird to say in 2024, but i think a lot of people still haven’t really processed how violent American police really are. watching them do crowd control just once will shake any residual trust in them out of you

I remember a story from the school I went to (after I graduated), where police arrived at an on-campus party and started arresting people - the university president ran there in his pajamas to tell police to fuck off because they didn't have the authority to come on campus and arrest students.
A university president that escalates a situation calling the police on non-violent students is a university president that should be unemployed.

This one's for the small business owners and job creators out there.
If our leaders can't agree on raising taxes on the ultra-rich, can't they agree at least on getting rid of this little, infuriating giveaway? Maybe.
