William Atherton's blind lead is from the old school of "I don't need help, I'm fine, I'm totally capable" disability portrayal but that's portrayed as consciously putting a positive and misleading face on a bad situation.

(GW Bailey is playing a gruff, authoritative, incompetent police officer, so you know he's not flexing any new muscles here but he's doing fine)

I'm assuming the murderer is Charlie Daniels because he's an big-name guest star who hasn't done anything important yet, but that's not always the case.
