The Dr Pepper version of Mountain Dew, Sun Drop, is still made with Brominated Vegetable Oil despite the FDA revoking Generally Recognized as Safe status for that additive in 1970.
This week, 54 years later, the FDA banned BVO in food. Imagine being the guy at Dr. Pepper in charge of Sun Drop. Putting poison in a drink that moves 200 units a year for more than half a century, the sword of Damacles hanging over your head the entire time.
In my old career when Dr Pepper was vetting us as a supplier I had to write a fucking book about food safety for a product that *was* GRAS. And they are out there pumping brominated triglycerides into the brains of what must be their most loyal customers if they are drinking Sun Drop.
