4th of July in Kotzebue: Baby contest, Miss Arctic Circle, & Arctic Circle contests started last night. Baby contest is named after my Aunt Louvie, master sewer and my dad's hunting partner until she passed in 2007/8. My cousin Shyena Lie is in the first baby pic, then representations of diff styles
I also hung out with a woman who knows our region's plants incredibly well, Lorrie Ward. I guarantee that the words are spelled wrong. My dad stores these in seal oil. I only tried the Masu, which my friend Kathy Ward (master dall maker) describes having a parsnip taste.
Being cute, mostly 😁 But their parents are judged on knowledge of family history, sewing skills, use of traditional materials, and more. Lots of babies had parkas and atiqluks that matched their parents this year
Oh my gosh, that baby parka!!!
(I love all the parkas. My favorite exhibit at Museum of the North was the needlework. But the baby parka is just adorbs.)
What you really want is the squirrels that raid garbage cans/dumpsters around fast food places or college campuses.
