Ravioli are dumplings, tortellini are not. I cannot justify this but my heart knows it to be true.

But also, if the puffy dough balls in US-style chicken and dumplings are dumplings, then it's a word without meaning, and any definition will collapse under close inspection.

yeah, I think when the dough is more complicated or is not a separate piece wrapped around some filling is gets messy so fast

Also, for me, "dumpling" implies a noodle-type wrapper (as in gyoza or xiao long bao) and not a bready wrapper (steamed buns or empanadas) so it's not just about filling enclosure.

I mean, this is the problem, right? So many variants that it's hard to draw a firm line. But to me, yeasted bao are not dumplings, they're filled buns.

True lol at "big fisher price style dumps," but yeah, for me, that leads you down the road to "Pop Tarts are dumplings," and I don't fuck with that kind of hot-dog-is-a-sandwich nonsense.

The answer here might be a version of Kenji Lopez-Alt's answer to the hot dog question. He decided it wasn't a sandwich because if you said "let's get sandwiches" and then showed up with hot dogs, that would be weird behavior. If I said "let's have dumplings" and provided yeasted buns, that's weird.

I think this mainly comes down to whether you are a person who is delighted by taxonomies, or a person who is bothered by contradiction? Either way, I will happily eat the bao.

Oh for sure, a dumpling should be steamed or boiled and maybe pan fried for crispyness If you get to baking or deep frying it then it's no longer a dumpling
