Why is Louise so special to you, @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com ? I mean besides all the obvious things. Are there special memories, performances, you connect with?

I loved her book of essays. I'd never heard of her and then I was sent a copy of Lulu On Hollywood, and I fell in love with the writing. Then i discovered what she had looked like, which was like she existed now.

And then I realized she came from Cherryvale Kansas, like the "bloody" Bender family.

Growing up in a crowd of Kansas art punks, I was hip to Louise at an early age. My best friend in college wore her exact haircut.

In a weird bit of coincidence, my mother was born in Cherryvale, KS about 20yr later. The actress Vivian Vance was born there about the same time a Brooks (in 1909).

A lyrics of a song I learned from Sesame Street, of all places: “You can tell the mailman not to call/ I won’t be back home til early fall/ If in fact I get back home at all!/ Lulu’s back in town!”

Which bridge? (Des Moines resident)

One of the downtown bridges. I don't recall which one, it was years ago. But that sketch has stuck in my mind.

Thank you for answering. She's marvelous. I didn't know she wrote essays, so obviously I'll be reading them soon.

I also highly recommend Barry Paris’ excellent biography.
