I’ve said it before, but Tesla’s only chance was to figure out how to make a real car company before real car companies figured out how to make Teslas, and they have blown it SO. BADLY.
Turns out you can’t just bullshit this stuff like it’s a half-baked video game launch.
Battlecruiser 3000AD never sent supporters to a fiery death by smearing them across a bridge abutment.
I had a strange reporting line to the CEO of a broker dealer (I was only a director). He was RUTHLESS with me, and said to me nearly every week "Under promise - over deliver".
Musk does the EXACT opposite.
He was "grooming me" and another dude "Steve". Steve he rotated through all departments. He was making him a CEO. I was being made a CTO.
I could (can) build a hell of a team, but I can't manage groups of people. Like, 5-12 is nice, but past that I am NOT your guy,
A few years back I jumped from 5 direct reports to 9, took a major shift in my approach.
From observing peers, agree that 12 or more direct reports is another threshold that requires a really different style.
I heard him say he knew more about MANUFACTURING period. Than anyone ALIVE.
It sounded so hysterical I imagined him repeating it over a loudspeaker to a crowd of thousands.
