It has been over 13 years since I had 4 weeks in a row off. A month into vacation, I’m happier, healthier, and reading like a wild woman. Our work culture is sick. Starting To the One I Love the Best by Ludwig Bemelmans.

Read Garlic, Mint, and Sweet Basil by Jean-Claude Izzo, translated by Howard Curtis last weekend. Sent me off in a few directions including wanting a copy of Lyrical and Critical Essays by Camus. Saved by university library but the cost to buy! Reprint? Any knowledge/advice?

Any Jim Harrison fans out there? I’d love some recommendations. Fiction first? Or nonfiction? Where to start? The usual asks. He keeps loitering about my reading. So enough signs, time to read.

Helped a friend wrap books in mylar dj covers this afternoon. I had never seen this Whipple edition before. The real treat was the endpapers.

My daughter called me this morning from Tokyo to tell me that she discovered her hotel is in “the book neighborhood.” Extended exploration happened. So proud that that’s my child.

Through the mail slot today. Delivered not by a usual carrier but by a very good neighbor. American Abductions by Mauro Javier Cárdenas. dalkeyarchive.store/products/ame...

I was obsessed with The Once and Future King as a kid, and still read it every year. Many editions live in this house but the 2003 Folio Society edition has eluded me. I’d find a copy and it would be too pricey, too damaged, etc. My daughter brought me a perfect copy today. ❤️❤️

Last summer, Rebecca @ofbooksandbikes.bsky.social & I met up at The Mount, Edith Wharton’s cottage, for a little field trip. What bit of literary tourism should we plan this summer? We’d love to hear your ideas. We will probably capture the fun in another @onebrightbook.bsky.social bonus episode.

The best card received for teacher appreciation week this year. I am a reading queen, people. A book rainbow. ❤️

Through the mail slot today. A package from Blackwell’s. Rural Hours: The Country Lives of Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Rosamond Lehmann by Harriet Baker. And A Telegram From Le Touquet by John Bude.

Through the front door this evening. Because I didn’t want to end up regretting leaving free reading possibilities behind. And they are both in amazing condition.

I’m going to reserve the next few days for moodiness. —Virginia Woolf, diary, June 16, 1937

Just a couple of days now. Looking forward to this conversation. Brutal brilliance.
One week until we discuss Joan Chase's In the Reign of the Queen of Persia from @nyrb-imprints.bsky.social, a "subtle story of three generations of women negotiating lifetimes of 'joy and ruin.' Join us!

“During the Reign of the Queen of Persia is a Norman Rockwell painting gone bad, the underside of the idyllic hometown, main-street, down-on-the-farm dream of Middle America.” —Margaret Atwood, The New York Times archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes....

My impulsive Saturday rereading choice. Trevor @mookse.bsky.social put out a call for books featuring time travel late yesterday. I remembered this one. And here we go. Startled to realize that it’s been about twenty years since I last read this. I hope I still like it.

Read in March. Today I’m floundering through three others, and it seems unlikely I’ll finish anything else. Plenty of good but Alphabetical Diaries and American Originality are the standouts.

Getting ready to talk about Louise Glück with Dorian and Rebecca tomorrow morning for the next episode of @onebrightbook.bsky.social. I’m taken with the ways Glück is inviting the reader into conversation and was curious about her thoughts on craft. Picked this up which is fascinating.

Through the front door today. In service to the school book fair. I was so busy there was no browsing time. Just quickly picked up three of the au courant. If you’re all reading them….

Today’s the day! Arming myself with donated gift cards, I’m headed in shortly to make some librarian and little kid reading dreams come true.
If anyone is shopping in one of the three Politics and Prose stores in DC on Sunday, I would really appreciate it if you mention that you want to support my school when you check out. Put new books into the hands of some awesome little people!❤️

Eleven physical copies in hand. Two pdfs with physical copies of those en route. This is the fastest I’ve ever been able to source the books for the IBP. #InternationalBooker2024
