President Biden campaigned against building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. But his administration filed notice on Thursday that it was waiving more than 20 federal laws and regulations, including environmental ones, to build additional barriers along the Southern border. nyti.ms/3titIaN

Biden just HAS to do right wing stuff, he has NO CHOICE, he SIMPLY MUST, his hands ARE TIED. Do a leftwing thing? No that's just not feasible don't be ridiculous, vote btw
Avatar
Love the responses that amount to "He absolutely has to do this thing because a 2019 spending resolution says so which is why he's breaking 20+ other laws to get it done."
Avatar
Aw jeez aw shucks oh no, guys those Republicans have OUTSMARTED me AGAIN. Ah nuts oh shoot, just gonna have to do what they want every time. No choice really.

The Clean Air, Safe Drinking Water, and Endangered Species Acts are also "the rule of law" but look at how that shit got waived in order to allow this environmental and humanitarian disaster to proceed unimpeded.
Avatar
Oh, requiring major projects to undergo extensive environmental review before being allowed to proceed is ALSO "rule of law," BUT HEY WHADDYA KNOW THAT SHIT GOT WAIVED, TOO
Avatar
Rule of law also state “nah”, but he’s just waiving those 26 laws off so he can do it
Avatar
This doesn't really alter the point though, does it?
Avatar
This sucks, but it’s also far from the full story, NYT.
Avatar
Pretty sure the executive branch cant just waive away laws. Do better at investigative journalism.

"Do better investigative journalism."

But writing a law that allows any executive ( trump ring a bell) to basically be able to just bypass it doesnt seem to me to be much of a law. My point is investigate the totality of this situation. Dont let Congress off.
Avatar
Congress wrote a law that allowed the executive branch to waive something they passed. Abdicating ones responsibility seems to be the biggest problem here. Biden admin def shouldn't be taking them up on their abdication.
Avatar
funny how he only ever pulls off use of his executive power for bad things
Avatar
Except for, you know, forgiving billions in student loans.
Avatar
there's trillions of student loans, so that's a rounding error. also he still owes me $20k.
Avatar
~10% is not a "rounding error," & the majority of what is left is held by higher income people than those who have already received relief. But that doesn't even matter, because it still flatly contradicts your patently absurd statement that he only uses EOs for bad things.
Avatar
Don’t worry. Biden will find ways to quietly undermine progress on the stupid 15th century wall. It amazes me how journalists continue to underestimate how wily this old guy is.
Avatar
Actually they can and they should sometimes
Avatar
It’s almost like the NYT doesn’t understand how Congress works. Newsflash. The guy y’all have been attacking for his age is old enough to understand the limitations of the executive branch.
Avatar
For his next act he'll drain the Everglades and indict Hillary.
Avatar
And still not win over moderate Republicans
Avatar
Maybe if he shot someone on 5th avenue.

Yes, this is because the funding was appropriated in 2019. Legally the funds have to be used for the wall. Your lede is disingenuous. I’m not a fan of Biden, but don’t blame him for the flaming bag of poo he was left with from the prior administration.
Avatar
What branch of government is he?
Avatar
Executive, but you have to understand that Executive doesn’t rule. All he can do is enforce the law and sign off on laws. The signed appropriation bill is a law; and he did not sign off on this - his predecessor did. Could he have delayed it more? I think so? But he can’t just ignore it.
Avatar
That said, the border wall is an asinine idea. The answer to any immigration “concerns" is not to build a wall but to get the US out of micromanaging the politics of other countries and let Central and South America alone.
Avatar

Avatar
If biden really wanted to halt the border wall then he should have asked the parliamentarian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Avatar
Bleak, bleak, bleak. In 1989 one wall came down. 34 years later another wall goes up. Progress, eh?
Avatar
Avatar
"Kids in cages" became "migrant overflow facilities" "build the wall" became "finish the wall" And people still think that voting for which guy is doing it matters at all.
Avatar
I think you're leaving out crucial information. I am unsurprised.
Avatar
The "crucial information" is that the administration is doing this just to spend money (they'll lose specifically earmarked funds for the border wall if they don't spend them before a certain date,) which is honestly even worse.
Avatar
Good to know the president can in fact ignore the law whenever he wants to, so every time he says he totally wants to enact an agenda but his hands are tied we know he's lying.

he should refuse. what will happen, they impeach him lol

Avatar
Cynical and weak, even if it works. It won't work, though, so it's also rochambeau-ing themselves.

Tell the FULL story. The administration is forced to move forward with this project bcuz funds were already allocated for this project in the previous administration. This administration is TOTALLY AGAINST it. They asked the congress to change it and they WOULD NOT. Tell the FULL STORY.
