In a dream last night Bruce Springsteen came into the bookshop and was trying to sell us a copy of Ziggy Stardust for $500. My manager talked him down to $200. Then I asked him what he thought of Hank Azaria’s odd Springsteen cover/tribute act he’s started doing, and he said he liked it.

As Bruce left he very off-hand started ranting about Kyle Gass’s “despicable” comments about the Trump assassination-attempt and how he’d never heard of Tenacious D before now.

The most profound moments in War & Peace are the ones where the characters become completely and absolutely disillusioned, like we’re the most alive or enlightened when we can clearly see that everything we understood was false, even if it crushes us.

But more striking to me is how Tolstoy is able to make disillusionment a positive, like in this unforgettable scene where gender collapses between Nikolai and Sonya while dressed up with the mummers, an encounter that enables them to be entirely — however briefly — in love.

It’s all just this long cycle of sleeping and waking up for these characters, which I find really beautiful because it’s basically what I’ve come to suspect about life. The key is just to be attuned to those moments of disillusionment and make the best of or even enjoy them if you can.

Finished this one that I took from my late aunt’s place. It’s a touching portrait of a beekeeper living in Donbas between Ukrainian and Russian Separatist lines, written before the current war.

As a political statement there’s a lot to chew on, & he very gradually brings you into the conflict & the complex tyranny of Putin’s Russia over the individuals of Donbas and Crimea. But it’s also beautifully written — the way Sergey moves through and relates to the world/nature is mesmerizing—

— and the book has a vivid and humorous sense for the small, rural, or local which reminded me somewhat of King of the Hill.

One of my fav students at the art program I work for mentioned off-hand a couple weeks ago that her Dad is currently in Palestine. I didn’t really know what to think of it or what that said about her background, other than that her home life must be pretty nuts right now —

— It’s not the sort of thing you can pry at all into with a 5 or 6 year old, but I’ve definitely kept it in mind, particularly since she shared this info while crazily/jokingly telling me her mom is a Queen and I should marry her mom and come live with them 😬😢

Today she was wearing a shirt with a Palestinian flag in a heart shape, and during the lesson she mentioned a Palestinian kids cartoon she watches, so it’s now clear to me she’s Palestinian, which makes me very worried for her dad, and my heart breaks for whatever this situation is she’s in —

— All that to say, I really would not have guessed any of this unless she had shared these details, in the same way i have to be mindful of what any of these kids, or anyone, could be experiencing out of my limited vantage point —

And in this particular case, I’m really inspired by this girl’s excitement for art, openness to imagination and play, and her constant, uncontrollable maniacal laughter and ability to amuse herself.

Like I said, I only see a tiny tiny tiny bit of these kids’ worlds, but she seems lucky enough to have some really profound tools at hand for coping with that world and for spreading that joy to others, which is just incredible to witness 😭

Biden is not the candidate to face off against Trump the Assassination Survivor, I almost expect him to just hand the presidency over to him. Really pissed at that kid and also all the people who failed him in life :(
