I am interested in learning what was going on in these prep sessions. Like, was he just hitting it out of the park, and this came as a complete surprise to his team? Or did they see it coming?

Yeah no kidding. In the first minute I thought he's racing to stuff talking points from a list into each answer, and he's getting lost trying to recite the list.
When annoyed he dropped all that and just spoke in his own words, and it was 100% better.

IMO the idjits were stuffing his head full of facts and retorts and Joe got lost in the thump of the bright lights and thrown by having to pivot to respond to Trump’s insanity. They should have drilled 4 messages to drive home and general to anything else.
