💥 New from me: A negative result paper. "Attention" in AI models is a continual source of breakthroughs. I tried a few approaches to see if I could get some insight into what AI sees as the important components of classical Latin prosodic style....and didn't succeed (yet) (with full code and data)
(Not) Understanding Latin Poetic Style with Deep Learningarxiv.org This article summarizes some mostly unsuccessful attempts to understand authorial style by examining the attention of various neural networks (LSTMs and CNNs) trained on a corpus of classical...

From Massimo Osanna on Instagram—stunning new frescoes from the insula of the Chaste Lovers (Casti Amanti). This is next level quality, and of course, very intrigued by the panel with what on first look is “hooded pouting baby/child with a pile of grapes (?) and a happy dog”.

I’m looking forward to discussing Euripides’ Iphigenia in Aulis in our reading group on Friday. It’s a troubling play.

I came across this statue of Medusa in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (1880). I wasn’t aware that she is represented as having wings attached to her head. She is very much focused on her hair. That is not surprising.
