The bartender at my local pub is from Cork. His response to anyone ordering an Irish Car Bomb: "Can't make you that, but I can make a 9/11. It's just two kamikazes dropped in a Manhattan."

In classical Athens, the word for a person who voluntarily chose not to participate in the institutions of the democracy -- who chose, for example, not to vote -- was *idiōtēs*, which is in fact the etymological root of our word "idiot." Maybe the @nytimes.com should publish a piece about THAT.

Artist Hitomi Terasawa drew a meticulous cross-sectioned rendering of Hong Kong's infamous Kowloon Walled City before it was razed in 1994. Now we have rare scans revealing the inner workings of the labyrinth-like metropolis. www.thisiscolossal.com/2024/07/kowl...

New piece! I struggled with this one a lot back when I started it a year or two ago, but it finally came together nice and easy when I went back and took a second look at it. 😊

Teaser: my new project tries to explain, at the sentence level, syntactic features that characterise classical poets' styles. It is, literally, time for some game theory.

Digital-savvy people, please help! I am looking for a platform to host a walking tour after I can no longer run them: something like a clickable map where you can add pictures, text, etc? e.g. this one I co-made on for an Oxford tour (oxfordstories.ox.ac.uk/medieval-churches-oxford)

#PhallusThursday What makes a wall really great? Phalluses. The Romans knew it. Hadrian’s Wall is a great example with a great many phalluses to be found along the structure such as this one. 📸 Carole Raddato 🏺AncientBluesky

the final stage of poster’s madness is believing that YOUR account is utterly vital to the operation of the entire site, and that if you leave, the management and all the users will lament to the heavens about your absence
