This is a scary read. “Universities aren't institutions of knowledge anymore. They're revenue streams.” hits too close to home

The description of where the money goes -- irrational capital expenditures and administrative featherbedding -- sounds an awful lot like where the money from corporate downsizing and "efficiencies" goes.

👇The state of play here: 40% of English Universities forecast to be in the red this year. Domestic fees (which I disagree with) have hardly increased since 2012 and there are only so many high-fee paying foreign students who can make up the shortfall. www.theguardian.com/education/ar....
Next government must make hard university funding decisions, fastwww.theguardian.com Labour sees no electoral gain in flagging sector’s funding crisis – but losses cannot be sustained much longer

"deep thoughts on Bakhtin that a few dozen people would read" Correction: that a few dozen people would DOWNLOAD. Only 1.6 people will read... including the author.

Wow! This was brutal... And accurate.

Sadly, I don’t see that happening, at least in Canada. Given demographics, I think health care spending is going to eat everything else for lunch. (Is this short-sighted? Yes. Is “short-sighted” the current definition of a politician? Also yes, IMO.)

This is excellent (but frightening) BTW.
Grew up in a southern state, flagship university has a popular basketball program. Have long believed a majority of the state populace would be perfectly fine w/ shuttering the school so long as the hoops keep going. People hated the university/professors, not for any specific reason, just because.
