Can we make this a thing? Post a tree we love? 💖 (Taken in Halifax, 2022)
just a tree that I love reminding me to love all of you, too
Avatar
I love how wiggly and bendy this tree is It's like "Hmmmm no I will simply twist myself around like the twisted ones" I would like to try painting this tree one day
Avatar
I imagine it making a Zoidberg “whoop whoop whoop whoop” noise as it twists upward

This bristlecone pine is dead, but it lived at least 3 thousand years so you shouldn’t feel bad for them. Took this in 2018 with a very long lens.
Avatar
This is not only a gorgeous tree, but a TREMENDOUS photo, my gosh. SO lovely.
Avatar
Thanks, Premee! I froze my fingers to take it, waiting for sunset. It was so windy and cold.
Avatar
You are a survivor just like that tree! 🥶
Avatar
Love the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, this photo is a composite (stitched) of four photos taken with a 3MP camera back in Sep 2004. Only way I could get the hole tree in one frame being so close to it from the trail, and using a fixed lens point N shoot camera.
Avatar
So pretty. I wanna go back.
Avatar
This is gorgeous gorgeous. Bristlecones are a favorite. Pls help me place it. GBNP or White Mtns?
Avatar
Thanks! White Mountains. A bit more info in the ALT text also.

This is the kind of post that makes bookmarks necessary 💚

Now THIS is the tree my mental image always pictured had a bunch of Dwarves, a Hobbit and a bedraggled wizard in it, fighting off wargs and Orcs with pinecones...
Avatar
This is a god damn beautiful shot.

Thanks! It was a very tricky angle to find, basically shooting with a telescope there.
Avatar
The framing of this is beautiful. Wonderful job!!
Avatar
Thanks! I have almost identical shots with Mt. Whitney behind it, but it simply doesn’t look as pretty as Mt. Williamson from this angle.
Avatar
This looks like souls leaving a portal. I also thought there was a cat sitting there. This is awsome and kinda spooky at the same time
Avatar
Can’t find the cat! But thank you.
Avatar
Oh there is certainly no cat but my brain sees one in all the shapes of the twigs. Its wild how much things my brain sees in a photo of a tree. Where i live we like normal looking trees maybe thats why.

This is just magic. Lovely shot!

Out of curiosity, how do we know how long it was alive? I thought you had to cut a tree down and count its rings.
Avatar
You don't need to cut it all down, you can take very small samples with a borer. It only leaves a small hole in the trunk without damaging the tree much at all, and you count the layers in that tiny sample.
Avatar
Avatar
Fun fact, this method is also used to measure CO2 levels trapped in layers of ice at the caps
Avatar
you can also use the tree rings as a CO2 proxy (gotta be careful and correlate it with other stuff like ice cores tho)! we have some of those cores at work in the deep freeze. i only ever get to see the empty tubes tho
Avatar
"We shall find his age! Cut him in half! Count his rings!"
Avatar
Have a majestic southern live oak!
Avatar
I LOVE IT I WISH THIS TREE AND I WERE FRIENDS
Avatar
This tree would LOVE to be your friend (and eat your body after death)
Avatar
I would be HONOURED to be eaten by this tree
Avatar
We can only dream to meet such a worthy end
Avatar
I should be so lucky One of my best friends has instead threatened to steal my body after I die and have me taxidermied in a position that will let him use me as a coffee table :(
Avatar
This is a non-fruit bearing cherry tree, and it brings me so much joy!
Avatar
This is now A Thing. This is a blue spruce I had planted this spring. I don't know why, but I especially love this particular tree in this particular spot. I throw nuts and seeds out between it and where this shot was taken from the window, so that critters have a secluded spot in front to eat.
Avatar
I love Colorado Blues. Wait until the growth spurt kicks in after the roots get well-established. Say goodbye to the lamppost*. 🤪 *unless it's one of the narrow, tall cultivars like 'fastigata'
Avatar
That is actually the plan. The lamppost annoys me. There's no switch for it, and it's just automatic, plus it sheds light nowhere near the house number. I'd rather have more subtle lights than this big glaring thing I can't turn off.

I was utterly awe-stricken by this row of chestnuts in Greenwich in 2014.

I can contribute this painting of a tree:

This tree has never eaten a human a day in its life. Definitely never eaten a few cougars or bears either. (From Avatar Grove, near Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island, 2016.)
