So SCOTUS has just given states and cities the okay to criminalize the state of being homeless. Very good.
First decision is Grants Pass. Gorsuch has the 6-3 opinion finding that the Eighth Amendment does not bar "generally applicable" laws banning public camping. Sotomayor writes the dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

Note that these laws also harm public safety, because they divert prosecutor & public defense resources and clog the courts with cases against people who aren't a threat. Not a constitutional issue. But a significant one. radleybalko.substack.com/p/the-states...

Just anecdotally, a problem I’ve seen in local police departments is that they see their job as “keeping order” rather than solving or responding to crimes

And in a city and county that only 15 years ago was so broke it only had 911 service for police 8-5 M-F
