The poet Ovid was banished from Rome in 8AD to Tomis (modern Constanța in Romania) by the Emperor Augustus. The council of the city of Rome revoked his exile in December 2017, over 2000 years after his banishment.

Oh, so now this hooligan will just be back on the streets again, scrawling his obscene “poetry” for all to see!
Doesn’t anyone think about the children anymore?
I'll have to take your word for that one Elizabeth. The reputation of Alcibiades senior is one I'm currently not at all familiar with. The name does sound quite villainous though!
Marvellous. Coincidentally, I was very recently given a Loeb of his Tristia and Ex Ponto by my sister in law & I’m looking forward to tucking into the Latin this weekend (yes, my life IS that exciting).
Well there's plenty to be said for more sedate and erudite forms of amusement. I envy at least one of your talents! My Latin is pretty rudimentary to say the least.
Thanks Lynn! I appreciate you sharing the link with me. At first glance, I think the level of Latin is some way beyond my comprehension but you've given me a target now, Latin in the Hundred Acre Wood.
Thanks Kathy. I promise not to mention Roman history all the time but it's likely going to be a quite common theme for me. My books are a set a little earlier than the Imperial period though and focus on significant events during the Roman Republic.
my husband and I talk about it a lot. One of my ancestors Antonio Francesco Gori was the 2nd man into Herculanium...smart enough not to go down the ladder first. We also get onto discussions of the republic pro/con. Plebs and patricians, definitely interested
That sounds quite sensible! Sometimes a little caution is advisable. Hopefully some of my posts will be of interest to you. The historical significance and cultural legacy of some of the people I've researched and written about is quite noteworthy. I'll have to find out a little about your ancestor!
