I wrote about horseshoe crabs—animals that will bump into the same wall over and over, and can’t right themselves when they capsize, but have survived like 6 mass extinctions. How did they do it? Read for my amateur (but fun and informed!) theories open.substack.com/pub/waterway...

I wrote about the General Slocum catastrophe, historical memory, and our diminished relationship with the water around us. It’s my first post for Landlubber, my newsletter about coastlines, oceans, rivers, etc. Take a look, subscribe! It’s free open.substack.com/pub/waterway...

Working my way through a great Sichuan cookbook and I’ve got all these new ingredients in my house. Lots of fun, very tasty. Hopefully my digestive system will figure out how to handle all these peppers eventually

Sam does cool stuff with maps and ebird data
Where can I see new birds? Mostly Arizona, apparently! Fun little project using eBird's Status & Trends data to map someone's potential lifers. More here: smsfrn.github.io/posts/2024/0...

I took this picture of a Portuguese man o’ war that washed up in Massachusetts in August. Not a jelly exactly, but a siphonophore, these guys have several components that, depending on how you think of them, constitute separate organisms or individuals or whatever. I think they’re cool

Galls are so crazy. A little mosquito-looking thing called a nun midge laid an egg in a goldenrod stem, and then chemically (?) hijacked the plant, forcing it to grow this weird, Dr. Seuss-looking treehouse for its baby

The best part about fall migration in NY is at the end when millions of striped bass surge down the coast and you can catch em with with a fishing rod
