Now that LLMs are proving financially and computationally VERY expensive and unpopular, I think tech may have reached critical mass
Big data is a treasure trove for scientific research. Among other things, LLMs and similar technologies can help us find structure and build and test theories using big data.
Ah, I did not consider the scientific uses of all that data. We'll have to see how LLMs and whatever else we're calling AI this week and the next will fare after all the money is shaken out of its pockets by the loudest mongrels in tech. I wish scientific research was sexy enough for tech on its own
About as well as the internet did after all the money from the dot com bubble was shaken out. Right now the fanfare is over the technology itself. As that gives way, we'll get plenty of excitement over actual products with these technologies in them.
