I tried Oshi no Ko this weekend not knowing anything about it other than the thumbnail and wow I haven’t bounced off a first episode that hard in a while

the What The Fuckery got us to keep watching purely to find out what on EARTH they could possibly want to do with this premise, but it really does take like seven hard turns across four completely different genres huh

Ohh I could see that!! I think it would be more interesting to me and easier to get through if the MC weren’t such a creep 😩

Its kind of weird bc they do a minimal amount of in-text effort to have him, by anime standards, Less Of A Creep Than He Could Have Been given the 2nd twist (but they do offload some of the creep onto a different character so its kind of net zero), and then by ep 2 its not even a factor in the plot

This is of course by a "high tolerance for anime bullshit" metric and you're fully in your right to bounce hard lmfao. But ep 1 def reads to me like one of those "playing with the tropes of a very specific subgenre" stories with a DENSITY of setup, so its not 100% reflection on the rest of the story

I translated an interview for Oshi no Ko recently and I didn't know much about the story at the time and by the end of the translation, I was deeply uninterested, so I totally get this 🤣

Yeah, my family started watching that one and I noped straight out of there. A lot of teenagers here in Korea love it.

It's a weird show where the rebirth element feels like a pitch gimmick that's then discarded in any practical sense. But it's a bad sign when a show practically turns to the audience more than once to say "this isn't creepy, don't you dare call it creepy!"
