The Baby on the Fire Escape by Julie Phillips contains an Ursula K. Le Guin anecdote I feel I should have encountered before, but no, I'd never heard this one. (It's a brilliant book, though I must warn you it might induce rage on behalf of those who were forced to navigate those unforgiving times.)

It's from one of my talks with her; I don't think she ever wrote about it.

She also told me the part about getting into an argument with her doctor about the need for family planning and having to stop herself from calling him an asshole.

Well, that explains why it's new to me!

Can’t wait for the biography to come out!

If you want more now, there's a whole chapter on her in my book The Baby on the Fire Escape, including the contraception story.

And a fascinating chapter it is!

I finished The Baby on the Fire Escape last year 😇 currently reading the James Tiptree, Jr biography, such a fascinating life as well, and your writing and narrative structuring are always superb!

At first I didn’t understand why Doris Lessing had a tuba and what it had to do with the story.
