This is a really, really good book and the world-building is fantastic. Highly recommend.

How's your century going? We're just a couple months away from being a quarter through, so now's a good time to recalibrate your expectations!

Watching THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (1973). I keep forgetting how sexy Roddy McDowell was.

At this point, any elected Dem who goes on tv, radio or talks to media should be talking about Trump and Project 2025 and the very real dangers they pose for this country That's it. Don't play the media's game. Change the game Make it about Trump and Project 2025

Ok, so six hours ago I had over 400 pages to go, and I just spent the last six hours reading, which is something I have not done in a long long LONG time.
I have not attempted a 1000 page book in quite some time, but I'm 400 pages through Stephenson's "REAMDE" and I am devouring it like popcorn. I *do* have the mental capacity to read for long stretches of time still, it turns out.

Don't let his lies scare you out of sharing the details of Project 2025 with everyone you know — especially those who are on the fence about their vote this year. There's good reason to believe knowing about Project 2025 focuses people's minds on the stakes. www.salon.com/2024/07/05/p...
Project 2025 was supposed to boost Donald Trump's campaign — but now it may be backfiringwww.salon.com Trump's authoritarian game plan is breaking through to people who haven't heard of it — and it's scaring them

For an institution that eschewed “gay” for “homosexual”way way way way longer than was warranted, the NYT’s continued slide into the cesspit doesn’t surprise me much

Fwiw, for me, I truly feel things were equally bleak from the mid 80s to the mid 90s but doomscrolling wasnt a thing then and direct action was much easier/safer because the level of surveillance was much lower so I feel like I was less mentally bogged down than I am now.

Rewatching IT FOLLOWS (2014) — the specificity of southeast Michigan as a location (instead of LA) just resonates so hard with me — and the soundtrack is perfection.

Holy hell this holds up so well. I felt like I was 18 in 1984 all over again. I think this might be my Star Wars
About to watch THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION (1984) on 35 mm

Remembering a TedX talk I gave 10 years ago on the theme of Sex, Drugs & Rock and Roll, specifically the sound engineer that high-fived me afterward because I name-checked Meat Beat Manifesto.

Watching WAKE IN FRIGHT (1970) and that throwaway moment where one of the blokes is making a chain out of all the pull-tabs from the beer, evoking a very clear memory of me doing that with my grandpa's pull-tabs in the early 70s.

Georges Méliès' THE DIABOLIC TENANT (1909) - omg, what a piece of magic

Watching PHASE IV (1974) before it leaves Criterion this month. (I saw it on TV not quite 50 years ago -- all I remember is giant anthills. We'll see if any other buried memories are uncovered.)

This is funny to me because Winona Ryder is exactly five years younger than me, to the day.
Do the Germans have a word for “That indescribable feeling when you realize all the “old” people on TV are five years younger than you”
