this shit is so bleak to me. like the reason i don't get run over with a car when i cycle over here isn't because people are just nicer here. it's that in such accidents the driver is at fault by default, because they should know better, and it's enforced. and i think that's the way it should be.
This is awful. Car murder is my go-to rant when someone complains about non-car murder crime. I think b/c “everyone” drives we identify with the driver vs the not-driver (in a way we can’t with a mugger) and don’t want our/someone we love's life ruined by an ‘accident’ so enforcement isn't demanded.
Setting aside the failures by the police (do they know what the word negligence means?), what would you want the courts to do here? I never really know what the appropriate answer is for unintentional harm. I don’t see how jail helps anything. Driving restrictions? Suspended license?
