What a day today. Got battered all round town, burned to a crisp in cobbled yards, laughed in the face of dehydration, and got a Jac Tshirt

Middle-American masculinity under pressure in Ida Lupino's taut desert noir, The Hitchhiker. Lupino shows us all she needs is a car, three men, and a script

Tabloid rack. Very funny to see the Mail and the Express last ditching it for the Tories. Those front pages are like death rattles. This is Liverpool so no The S*n

Middlemarch update: the newlywed Casaubons have had a spat that consisted only of flushed faces and concealed irritation but was somehow up there with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf

Seeing Kim Deal at Glastonbury has done my heart good. I was down the front when she was there with the Pixies in 1989 and can testify she hasn't changed a bit

The Lost World (1925) is barrels of fun. Willis O'Brien's stop motion is, er, charmingly quaint (the technical quantum leap he made between this and King Kong is breathtaking). Wallace Beery's brawling prof looks like he could beat up the dinosaurs, and a fine turn from Jocko the monkey as himself

Just watched Im Kwon-taek's Mandala (1981). An earnest, striving novice is drawn towards a disgraced older monk who looks for enlightenment in soju bottles and the arms of prostitutes. A masterpiece. If you watch the first five minutes you won't be able to stop www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztXi...

Dietrich of the day, The Devil is a Woman (1935). Fun but flimsy. A very thin part for her, and she doesn't seem to take it at all seriously, but she said it was the best thing she ever did with Sternberg, so what do I know?
