I think it’s a practical realization that (1) this means someone Republican will take over and reevaluate the case and (2) the case will be tainted in a way that will immediately cause things to start going badly.

The lawyer who filed this, Ashleigh Merchant, is a brilliant appeals attorney with a long history of digging up embarrassing dirt in court filings. If she says it, there's a good chance it's true.

I mean that doesn’t matter, politically. It’s a Caesar’s Wife situation and just having the allegation made by a reputable lawyer has undone all the good done by the attempts to hold The Sunbed King to account.

If the allegations are meritless, then this will be an ugly flash in the pan and will be held as a bloody shirt by Trumpers, but it won't actually destroy the case. In the much likelier event they're real, though, this is a disaster.
