holy shit I just realised that the US election is on Guy Fawkes Day

It’s official: the majority of the UK House of Commons has now been called for Labour, ending 14-year of Tory rule.

If you're wondering what the blocked post was, someone decided to scold me for claiming that independence from the UK was the most widely celebrated holiday in the world on the grounds that I was being western-focused and ignoring most of the world. Really.
India. That's it; that's the skeet.

Watching the British election returns I feel compelled to point out that the 650 person House of Commons represents 67 million people and the 435 person House of Representatives in the United States represents 333 million. Replace the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929. We deserve representation.

One thing that made Harris a dubious candidate was the over-the-top primary election promises she made. Any person trying to replace Biden and defeat her in a contested convention would have to make similar, and perhaps considerably worse, promises in public to The Groups.
co-sign but i will add: i don't know the best path but i do know the worst path, and that's replacing him with anyone other than kamala, via any process whatsoever.

No but I love when all you beautiful sickos start posting shit like "Bogroubler flips Hambarn upon Gwynyychlyyrah! A huge result!" It's like hanging out with people being poisoned by carbon monoxide. None of those places are real

Election coverage in India: screen split into 192 windows with everyone shouting insults & analysis together Election coverage in USA: 16 cutaways per minute along with montage of Steve Carnacki & flashing chyrons & blinking graphics that make everyone dizzy Election coverage in UK: Here is a cat

People are very unhappy with most incumbents in major democracies. It will do us no good in the end if they lose, but Biden-Harris are in relatively good shape in comparison.
Exit polling suggests 410 seats for Labour and only 130 for the Tories, which “would be the worst defeat for the Conservatives in the nearly 200-year history of the party”

Yup. Lots of people pointing out obviously this would be weaponized against LGBTQ folks. But also it just fundamentally bristles with a hostility towards privacy and freedom that runs through the entire project.
And, their definition of "porn" includes acknowledging the existence of trans people.

Man, if it turns out that the right winger telling NY Times readers that they should follow his example and not vote did in fact vote in the last two elections, the Times should add this to the piece. Better than a retraction, since it illustrates a willful hypocrisy.
He voted in both 2020 and 2022.

As our former overlords go to the polls today, a fun fact: the first time a UK government fell on a vote of no confidence was when Parliament voted to end the war with America, causing Lord North and the Cabinet to resign. It was an important milestone for British democracy, ironically enough.

"So the Pope goes, 'Hey guys, how's that Crusade to Egypt going? Take any big cities from the Muslims yet?' And we're like, 'Well, we definitely took *a* big city, Pope. That's what really matters, right?"
Medieval history stand up. The wispy haired old british men with patches on their jacekt elbows crowd will LOVE it.

Instead, they stealth-edited the title.

He also went to ludicrous lengths to conceal the fullness of his permanent disability, though, including forcing himself into what were effectively stress positions so he could be photographed standing. The US public reacts very poorly to physical frailty and he was afraid of that.
It’s a very obscure question but I did some research and it turns out that the president who led us out of the Depression and kicked Hitler’s ass was actually in a wheelchair? Who knew?

"Independence from Britain" is the world's most celebrated holiday.
"you're not American why do you care about the 4th of July" mate I'm Indian, any day someone got the Brits to fuck off back to their country is a national holiday for me
Avatar
Yeah, but you can do that with just about any country's history. The past is an ugly place. What makes the US special is how much it did to make itself better, then make the world better. Compare the US to any major power ever--its history is far less hideous (yes, even with all the atrocities).
Happy fourth

So you can take what you want from the Exit Poll and certainly celebrate Labour’s success. But now it seems the UK has its own Trump and Freedom Caucus that will dominate debate because they shout louder than everyone else. Bad things start small. Let’s hope those figures change. #UKGE2024

Fun fact: unlike in Brazil, where rule of law still exists for presidents, in the US now it is now impossible to enforce our Emoluments Clause in any way, shape, or form, because that would require gathering evidence about the president's official acts. Trump would get to keep the diamonds.
Brazil’s Federal Police have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro for money laundering and criminal association in connection with undeclared diamonds the far-right leader received from Saudi Arabia during his time in office, according to a source with knowledge of the accusations.

The big problem is that, while Trump is definitely way further gone than Biden, the main way he's further gone is a complete absence of any tether to reality--but it's something you only notice if you realize that nothing he's saying is true or makes sense. And most voters are too ignorant to know.
This is top article on front page. "...Mr. Biden’s voice has grown softer and raspier, his hair thinner and whiter... adding to an impression of frailty. Mr. Trump, by contrast, does not appear to be suffering the effects of time in such visible ways." NYT can go fuck itself with a rented dick.

On this day especially, remember that this won't be the first time America has had to win a prolonged struggle against a man who would be our king.
