What if - and hear me out - from now on, we judge debate performance by the accuracy of the participants statements?

I want political debates to operate under the same rules as college debates, with a panel of judges who score the answer.

I was listening to a podcast about college debate and apparently the metrics on those are set so that a winning strategy is to sound like an auctioneer? Anyway, after listening I understood why Ted Cruz was a “college debate champ.”

Yes! As a former competitive speech and debate kid, this is the way

And as a former competitive speaker and later coach, I think it was only a *little* over half the time that we wanted to kill those judges (metaphorically, I assure you).

I'm interested to see how you flesh out the world building in this speculative fiction.

Honestly, debates aren't part of their job, and we have 4 years of actual presidency to judge them both by. Sure makes my choice clear and easy.

Wait…as if it were a debate? Like with moderators & topics & scoring & stuff instead of just watching participants let down their hair & set themselves on fire? You know, that might actually catch on.

Well when we don't do that it effectively requires that the debates devolve into bullshitting contests and an exercise in charismatic domineering- Frankly, when your options are the most-domineering bullshitter, you're screening out the decent people

Calling it a 'debate' is such a setup. There isn't anything about it that resembles an actual debate.

and There's the real problem.

It won't catch on I can't see how this would work.

Who exactly has done that in the past? And why would anyone do that?

Every high school or college debate team ever. Because if everyone lies, all the time, you have to make decisions on who is loudest.

No, no. It's based on who was best dressed.
