I was listening to a podcast about college debate and apparently the metrics on those are set so that a winning strategy is to sound like an auctioneer?
Anyway, after listening I understood why Ted Cruz was a “college debate champ.”
And as a former competitive speaker and later coach, I think it was only a *little* over half the time that we wanted to kill those judges (metaphorically, I assure you).
Wait…as if it were a debate? Like with moderators & topics & scoring & stuff instead of just watching participants let down their hair & set themselves on fire? You know, that might actually catch on.
Well when we don't do that it effectively requires that the debates devolve into bullshitting contests and an exercise in charismatic domineering-
Frankly, when your options are the most-domineering bullshitter, you're screening out the decent people
