GOOGLE 2004: Don’t be evil GOOGLE 2024: Don’t be useful

I love how they quietly got rid of any mention of Don't be evil from their press. It's like oh, so you are definitely about to start doing some evil shit then.

They never got rid of it. It was simply moved it to a different spot in their code of conduct (rather than being in the introduction, it was moved to the closing line).

Because it's the last thing they consider. -xoogler

They just made a deal with a military that is slaughtering tens of thousands so I think they're doing the evil pretty well

That combination of words may be impossible to not sing once you’ve processed them. It’s like hearing the opening to Butterfly or Can’t fight the moonlight.

I think it’s the drop on “time” that requires it. It’s a fun interval, almost soothing on the throat after the start of the lyric.

It's weird how important it is to scramble meaningful communication and information access on this election year huh

The utility of AI is debatable. But what’s hilarious is… there are ways they could implement GenAI that would make it *feel* like a useful tool. However, they instead tried to make it a replacement for their most useful product, trusting its output to replace all information. They… failed. Badly.

A lot can change in a quarter century. No one would have ever predicted how cozy Google would get with the American Spy Apparatus.

The less useful you are, the more impressions you get and the more ads you can serve. Need to be as least useful as possible to optimize those ads impressions.

I'm literally suggesting people use their favorite non-google search engines. Like duck duck go

Wonder how long it'll take to get to "Don't be", followed by "Don't.." as whatever ends up supplanting it, does so. I remember it once being a lovely, efficient little ad-free search engine. How far it has tilted the other way. What a shame.
