Last night while coming home I saw the most beautiful view of the St. Paul skyline I've ever seen. Thankfully I was able to pull off on Point Douglas Road before the light faded.

Took a day trip down the Mississippi today, and caught Amtrak's Borealis in both directions. The Chicago-bound train was captured passing over the Hastings Lift Bridge, the St. Paul-bound train was captured just outside of Red Wing.

Two Indigo Buntings captured at Pikes Peak State Park in northeastern Iowa. First an adult male in bright breeding-season blue, the second a teenage male in camouflage brown. Taken this week with my S5 and 70-300 telephoto.

A BNSF intermodal train roars northbound along the Mississippi, over the bridge at the confluence with the Wisconsin River. A 5-unit set leads, with a pair of GEVOs, a "heritage" C44-9W, and a pair of SD70s. Taken from the overlook at Pikes Peak State Park, 500 get above the river.

The USCG's initial investigation finds that the Michipicoten may have suffered from a stress fracture, not a collision. Sounds logical to me, and concerning, since there are multiple other vessels this age still working on the great lakes. www.detroitnews.com/story/news/l...
Coast Guard: Lake Superior freighter has 13-foot crack, but likely not from collisionwww.detroitnews.com The gash in the ship’s hull “is likely due to a stress fracture,” a Coast Guard spokesman said.

The Michipicoten has safely arrived in Thunder Bay! Credit to the crew of the Edwin H Gott who escorted it to the Canadian border, and the Canadian Coast Guard for guiding it to safety. www.tbnewswatch.com/local-news/m...
Oh no! The Michipicoten is one of the older ships on the lakes, built in 1952. Looks like the Edwin H Gott and a national park service boat have reached it, so if the pumps fail the crew will have help. www.wdio.com/front-page/t...

Found something cool recently — the University of Minnesota's MHAPO collection, a huge digital archive of aerial photos of the state, spanning from 1923 to the 2000s. Check out this shot of two lakers entering Duluth Harbor under the Aerial Lift Bridge in 1948. apps.lib.umn.edu/mhapo/

There is a Cybertruck at the Tesla "dealer" in Maplewood, which is intriguing because they allegedly had 2 million reservations. If after ~6000 deliveries they've already filled the demand then this is truly a failure for the ages.

The 2.2% grade between Duluth and Proctor has been a choke point for over a century; and even today it takes 9000hp to lift a ~40 car train of limestone up the hill. As old as these CN SD40-2s are getting the ore jennies are even older, many are still wearing DMIR paint. Taken today with my S5.

What's next after diesel? How about the solution rail carriers have been too cheap to implement for 100+ years — electrification? (I don't have a WSJ subscription to read this, but I don't need to, electrification is the only proven and realistic option)

Here's the first 2 shots edited from the 700 I took last night (was trying timelapses). The show when I first arrived is the best I've ever photographed. I used my Laowa 15mm ultrawide to capture as much as possible. Taken with my S5 in the Carlos Avery State WMA near Wyoming MN.

If you live in the northern US/Canada, get outside now. Do it. This aurora is absolutely must-see.

You can never pass on a chance to see a steam locomotive in action. Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 #2816 departs Saint Paul Union Depot on its Final Spike Tour from Calgary to Laredo, to celebrate the CPKC merger. Taken from Indian Mounds Park with my Panasonic S5. (1/3)

A slightly late, and surprisingly short, Texas Eagle pulls into Temple Texas today. P42DC #68 celebrated its 27th birthday sometime last month.

Totality on Temple, Texas. Straight from the camera shot, only cropped. It was cloudy all morning, but cleared up just in time.

The schooner Hjørdis rounds Artist Point in Grand Marais MN. I had pushed my body too hard the two days before this, and resting in the sun on the beach here is one of my favorite memories of this trip. Taken June 8 2023 with my S5.

Well this is fascinating. I guess Nikon has gotten fed up with being behind Canon and Sony and wants to go all in on cinema.

A four shot sequence of the most impressive mechanical ballet I've ever seen. The 1004ft (306m) MV Edwin H Gott pulls into the tight confines of Agate Bay in Two Harbors MN, then, unassisted, pirouettes to slide into the ore dock. Captured with my Panasonic S5 June 10 2023. (1/2)

Two shots from my current favorite view of the Minneapolis skyline, the University of Minnesota East Bank campus. First a sunrise shot, taken October 18 2022 with my S5. A St Paul bound Green Line light rail train has just crossed the Washington Ave Bridge. (1/2)

Last light falls over the Chicago River October 2018. I think this still holds my record for most transport modes in a shot- boat, car, train, and plane. The River Point and Wolf Point towers have totally changed this view now. Taken with my Sony a6300 from the Clark Street Bridge.

It had been too long since I last visited a real hobby store, so I made a visit to the amazing Scale Model Supplies in St Paul. They have a little bit of everything, in particular plastic model kits of every variety and model trains. I didn't buy anything today but I hope to be back soon.

My favorite waterfall in Minnesota, the gorgeous High Falls of the Pigeon River. Located way up on the Canadian border north of Grand Portage, it's a haul to get to but so worth it. Taken with my Panasonic S5 June 8 2023 using a 2 second exposure.

Canadia Steamship Lines laker Baie Comeau is tied up in Duluth MN awaiting its next load on 1/8/24. The 734ft (225.5m) ship is one of the youngest on the Great Lakes, but has seemingly not been painted since it entered service in 2013.

The aurora was only faintly visible to the naked eye last night, but a 4 second exposure and a bit of Photoshop magic and it pops. Taken from the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area just outside Wyoming MN with my Panasonic S5.
