There's no rational, reasonable or honest interpretation of this which does not describe a bump stock:

Admittedly, I don't know where arguments (or technology) are on this now, but I thought the traditional hair-splitting argument was that the bump stock causes the trigger to be pulled without moving your finger (by using the recoil of the gun to repeatedly activate it).

This actually shows why the ATFs actions where found to be unlawful in this case. A bumpstock does not change how a semiauto trigger functions, so it does not meet the lawfull definition of a machinegun. The legislative branch creates(writes) law, the executive branch applies the law.

When the ATF declared bumpstocks to be machineguns,they did so by "reinterpreting" the law in a way that was definitionally in conflict with what congress passed. IE the executive branch was acting as the legislative branch, In a rather obvious violation of the constitutional separation of powers.

Unless they demo'ed the bump stock mounted on a black powder musket, this an obviously overt act of bad faith. A five year-old can discern the firing speed differences between a bumped vs non-bumped rifle.

It's not that they don't understand. It's that they don't care.

Republican justices do not get nominated for their brainpower or common sense or judicial temperament.
