July is a pretty slow month for herps over here in Middle Tennessee but you can still find cool stuff with some patience! Here's a really pretty Queensnake found today while creek walking! 🐍
I've been resting this week for the most part so I don't got any herps from this week to show sooo here's a very pretty Garter Snake I found while road cruising last week! 🐍
If you have some bad pic favs, let's see 'em! Quote reply with your #badpics!
Somehow nothing at all is in focus in this attempted shot of a Bufflehead Duck. In my defense it was waaaay past sunset & my camera said "you're kidding, right?"
Over on Twitter we called this a #WorstBirdPic#birds 🌿
A stunner of a Milksnake I found crossing the road a couple of nights ago, right as it was getting dark! It's always a good session when I get to see a Milksnake! 🐍
Based on what I posted last night, I have this, I guess collage of pictures of all the snakes I have seen in Tennessee. The black squares are the ones I'm missing.
Beautiful Salamanders from last night after a random thunderstorm at like 11PM! 🦎
1) Red Salamander
2) Marbled Salamander
3) Long-tailed Salamander
4) Spotted Salamander
A couple of Timber Rattlesnakes found on crossing the road on Wednesday night! Funny thing, I've already found more Timbers this year than I did in the entirety of last year! Crazy! 🐍
Probably the latest Eastern Box Turtle I will ever see! Found this guy crossing the road at 8:20PM a couple of nights ago, crazy to see one of them moving after sunset! 🐢
A few Six-lined Racerunners I found this morning! This is the only Whiptail species we have in Tennessee. They are pretty seasonal here and very picky of their habitat so they can be tricky to find. 🦎
First Timber Rattlesnake of the year!!! Found this one about to cross the road right at dusk yesterday. Such a stunner too!! After some quick pictures I helped them cross to the other side safely! 🐍
Here's a few Salamanders from last night after a rain! I'm surprised how productive it was considering the rain stopped before dark, but the roads were wet enough to get stuff moving for an hour or so. 🦎
1) Red Salamander
2) Cave Salamander
3) Long-tailed Salamander
4) Southern Two-lined Salamander
A few snakes from a short trip to Atlanta this weekend! 🐍
1) Red-bellied Snake
2) DeKay's Brownsnake
3) Gray/Eastern Ratsnake (Complex)
4) Smooth Earthsnake
A couple of Cave Salamanders found last week during some big storms.
I initially wanted to cruise a different road but it was closed by the police due to flooding, so I ended up cruising a bit 5 minutes away from my house and saw these beauties! Love Cave Salamanders! 🦎
I think I'll try to target Prairie Kingsnake throughout May. It's probably a little late in the season to start trying for them but I really want to find one in Tennessee, so I may as well go for it.
Here's a picture of the only one I've been able to see. From Kentucky last year. 🐍
A Rough Green Snake a friend and I road cruised on Wednesday during a warm afternoon. I almost never get to see Green Snakes so I was pretty happy about it! First one of the year! 🐍
My lifer Eastern Hognose Snake from yesterday! I went road cruising with a friend specifically targeting these and in our first pass I spotted this guy's tail slithering out of the road. The only bad thing is that they played dead almost the entire time so it made pictures hard but I'm sooo happy! 🐍
Another neat find @jamiethebnnuy.bsky.social and I got during our road trip was this Barred Owl perched just to the side of a road we were road cruising! I freaking love owls! 🪶
@jamiethebnnuy.bsky.social and I went on a road trip to see the eclipse! We did a bit of herping and found 4 Milksnakes on Sunday afternoon!! Here's 3 of them! We got unbelievably lucky with these, all out of shed and absolutely beautiful! 🐍
Also, here's a picture of the eclipse from my camera!
Last weekend I managed to road cruise my first Copperhead of the year during a pretty warm night! I love seeing these guys, such a pretty species. I also helped them cross the road safely! 🐍
I have no idea what to say about this one. I experienced so many emotions finding these two snakes... 10 months of planning and an impromptu car camping trip once the temps were favorable, culminating into these two snakes. Here's two Scarlet Kingsnakes, one of the rarest species from the area. 🐍
It rained a bit last night and even though I was super tired I decided to do some road cruising. Even though it was a bit slow, I found a few neat things, including my first Red Salamander of the year! 🐸 🦎
1) Red Salamander
2) Long-tailed Salamander
3) Spotted Salamander
4) Southern Leopard Frog
Here's a cute juvenile Black Racer from earlier today! It was pretty cloudy and decently chilly so it was nice to see a medium sized snake today! I love juvenile Racers, their patterns are so cool! 🐍
