I think they're trying to find a way to make it work without ads, if only because bsky's architecture doesn't map well to that revenue source: bsky.social/about/blog/7...
I dunno, I haven't seen anything yet that feels like it would be enough income to work, but I hope they can make it work.
Shhhh, don't mention the "a" word! We don't need any of that Twitter/X enshittification over here. 😩
Jokes aside, I hope they find an alternative means. There are better ways to fund a platform. I mean...I'd pay for a cheap subscription to keep it ad-free.
Wouldn't be bad if had ads people wouldn't mind - as in few, not deranged & non intrusive.
Like was nice back when the trends on pre-psycho-ceo twitter would mention things I was waiting for, like when new shows & events came out.
But the slippery slopes are an issue, a few bribes & buyouts and then here comes the companies forcing atrocious BS down everybody's throats, only ever happens practically every time.
I agree with both of you. Having some ads interspersed isn't that bad. On Reddit for example, it's not the horrific.
However, having a VP of Sales and an entire sales department, as part of every decision made at a company inevitably leads to enpoopification.
Iirc, it's not really something they're considering. But they aren't 100% closed about it either. Some of the major ideas right now for revenue I believe is (once the decentralized infrastructure is actually built) offering to host peoples bluesky instances.
The nature of Bsky makes ads ineffective
The last part is part of why Musk cranked up the price of the Twitter API to an extremely expensive level and also explicitly banned using said APIs for creating 3rd party apps (regardless if anyone is actually willing to provide such a thing given the aforementioned costs).
If the Bluesky appview did have ads then someone would create a fork of said appview that has no ads. Everything to do with Bluesky is open source after all.
