The financialization of markets is likely the ugliest and most destructive outcome of the neoliberal movement. As much as I want it to fail (though its failure is inherent to its unsustainable nature [see: capitalism]), I’m dreading the aftermath.

Interesting you mention Welch treating workers as cost centers but exempting management. Have you read The Rebirth of American Industry by Waddell and Bodek? It deals with how Sloanist accounting treats labor as the only cost, while transforming everything else into an asset via overhead absorption.
