Opinion: Scientists have become sitting ducks. We need leaders to step up and defend uswww.latimes.com Americans need science to sustain democracy and progress. The alternative is to follow the path of the Soviet Union: sidelining experts and sacrificing lives.

The anti-science movement and their brute force disinformation campaign is running the table while our state and national institutions, the ones who purportedly represent us and the public good, can’t be bothered. They all continue funding Republican candidates for office in 2024, just like 2020.

And harassment of scientists was particularly amplified by Twitter! I’m not saying there wouldn’t have been abuse without Twitter, but this platform was clearly an enabler of such violence.
