The raw material for the Statutes Project - hundreds of volumes of statutes - was gathered together via Google Books, a significant proportion of which I requested like this.
If you find an out of copyright book on Google Books, that they have a scan of but aren't making fully available, use this form to ask them to release it: support.google.com/websearch/an... It's simple, gets results, and enriches the #PublicDomain

I keep trying to do entirely normal things like obtain phone service and I keep hitting entirely bizarre obstacles and I still do not understand whether I am unusually unlucky or whether this happens to everyone and we just never talk about how opaquely broken *everything* is

This is a really lovely article, on Black librarians preserving and making accessible Black writing:
This article perked me right up this morning. "On the job, [Black librarians] learned these tools weren’t always suited to Black books and ideas, so they invented their own." That's what I'm saying. And we still got more of this work to do. www.nytimes.com/2024/06/19/a...
How Black Librarians Helped Create Generations of Black Literaturewww.nytimes.com Recent scholarship is uncovering the role of the women who ran libraries during the Harlem Renaissance where they built collections and, just as important, communities of writers and readers.

Interesting review by @timhitchcock.bsky.social of Simon Devereux's book Execution, State, and Society in England, 1660-1900, which criticises the 'civilizing process' as an explanation for the abolition of capital punishment in the UK. www.h-net.org/reviews/show... #History 🗃️

The precariat - more often than not - have to do our own research in our own time. Unpaid labour is a feature, not a bug.
Pretty much everything that happens in academia, happened because three or more anonymous people each dedicated 6 to 30 hours of labor that's both uncompensated and un-accounted for in their home institution workload 🤷‍♀️
