Yesterday, I shared this same Canada Day thread on Bluesky, Threads, and X. Here's what I found. 🧵
“Canada is such a northern country, don’t we want a little global warming?” I often hear. In a nutshell, NO. We’re warming 2x faster than the rest of the world, driving extreme heat, flood, and sea level rise we are not prepared for. The wildfire season started in Feb this year. Feb! #canadaday

In an unusual move, CDC has revised its recommendations for who should receive an RSV vaxx: everyone 75 and older but among 60-74, only those with certain severe conditions. Previously it was 60+ in consultation with a health care provider www.nytimes.com/2024/06/26/h...

There is no guarantee that the bird flu virus will remain benign if it begins to spread among people. Accumulating evidence from the animal world and data from other parts of the globe, in fact, suggest the opposite. www.nytimes.com/2024/06/17/h...
A Bird-Flu Pandemic in People? Here’s What It Might Look Like.www.nytimes.com There is no guarantee that a person-to-person virus would be benign, scientists say, and vaccines and treatments at hand may not be sufficient.

It’s official: FDA is asking manufacturers of Covid vaccines to target the JN.1 variant for the fall 2024 doses. JN.1 is already out so it’s not totally ideal but it is their best gamble (they say) to protect us from whatever comes our way in the fall.

At the height of Covid, 194 countries started negotiating a plan to ensure they would do better when the next pandemic inevitably arrived. Their deadline for that plan was last week. Why did it fail? www.nytimes.com/2024/06/06/p...?

Countries Fail to Agree on Treaty to Prepare the World for the Next Pandemicwww.nytimes.com Negotiators plan to ask for more time. Among the sticking points are equitable access to vaccines and financing to set up surveillance systems.
