Just to be clear:
Right wing ELECTED Congress members blocked Obama's scotus picks and packed the courts with Trump's picks.
Every horror and fascist we are seeing was put there by rightwing lockstep mobilized voters. Voting works and it is working very very well for the right.
I never want to hear "voting doesn't work or matter" when the party that actually shows up to the booths is getting everything their craven little black hearts desire.
specifically, voting matters, which is why the GOP have worked for decades to erode our access to it. i just wish the power voting still holds was more apparent even as rome burns
It won't with that attitude. Make it a pain in the ass for em run those election coffers dry and make them work for every person they turn away or demand ID from. Rolling out the red carpet ontop of yourself simply because you are used to being walked on is insane.
i’m voting this year, make no mistake. the past few days have really turned me around on its continued importance. but i think what also helped was coming to understand that leftism must use all available tools, not just declare the state failed on all accounts and wait for the revolution
basically there’s no one size fits all method for making the world better, you use the tools that are suited to each task. you can’t vote away climate change or capitalism but that doesn’t make the vote worthless. it just means you vote where the vote is needed, and fix the other stuff by… y’know
It's especially galling when people say voting doesn't work because the GOP has figured out how to game it so their dedicated guys voting, and the general populous *not* voting both benefit them. Not voting is basically voting conservative, for all intents and purposes.
It may seem hard but things can change fast when people are mobilized. In my county, it's decidedly Republican and our town sheriff was the Republican pick. He was the presumed winner before the election, but we broke them! We divided the conservative vote by canvassing over his corruption charges.
The guy in charge now has been spending the last year cleaning house, removing the deputies who BRIBED THEIR WAY into getting a badge, aiding the DOJ on further investigations, and pressing charges against the previously mentioned and now former sheriff and those deputies.
Which stresses another point... The down-ticket matters way more than some people give credit for!
Town Council, Treasurer, School Boards, Sheriff, etc... These positions matter far more to your immediate quality of life than a federal representative and you should give a damn about it.
Yet they complain things are going too far left in office, the right comes out and votes even more, stacking more right-wing politicians; rinse, wash, and repeat.
It’s been the past decade trend
Not american but I voted simply so that the political parties I don't like essentially get another vote. Inducing apathy in the opposition is how right wing parties fester their way in. Atleast we have a culture of "if you don't vote you don't get to complain, so go do it."
And it honestly worked this year. The incredibly right wing political party (with policies of build a border wall, kick out immigrants, lowering taxes, allow the hunting of endagered species) in sweden this year got way less votes than usual, I think it landed around 16%? Voting genuinely does work
