Pixar forcing queer and POC stories to go straight to streaming, then using the lack of theatrical success as an excuse to kill queer and POC stories is the entire entertainment industry in a nut shell.
They learned nothing from Nimona, queer stories can do well! The movie was Oscar nominated and everything. I’m sure if Nimona was in theaters for more than a few special previews in NYC and Los Angeles it woulda done really well too
I would personally love to own a physical copy of Nimona. I wonder what kind of sales a physical release would garner. And I wonder if the desire to hide that market may be part of the reason we haven’t seen one yet.

They were announced only after the opening weekend of Disney’s in-house Wish ate dirt. Disney expected that movie to play into spring but once it was clear it wouldn’t they needed something to offer presumably angry exhibitors, and fast.
I believe those rules were more complicated at the time, but I could be wrong. They were also originally released in different qualifying years and the re-release was this year.

Lightyear had a same-sex kiss and wasn’t straight to streaming. And the streaming decisions were at least partially due to there being a pandemic that kept people away from theaters and signing up for Disney+
