When news media think saying they have an impact will make them look good, they will sing in harmony for months on end about what an incredible role they play keeping democracies going. When they think it will make them sound bad, then they are just smol beans chasing clicks, it's all in your head.

It's a shame to see so many people who claim to be pro-democracy rapidly get on board with forcing out a candidate who has now won two primaries and one general election. But that's clearly the direction we're headed.

Is it really democracy when you do stuff without even consulting the Sena—i mean — House of Lotds
The Telegraph reports that Keir Starmer, on his first day as Prime Minister, is scrapping the "Rwanda scheme,' the Tory plan to deport all asylum seekers & undocumented immigrants to Rwanda wherever they are from. (This was a Starmer platform promise.) www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

How does a journalist go from stating that Project 2025 "is undeniably a Trump-driven operation" to "Heritage Foundation's Project 2025" in the span of 7 months?

I think it's as basic as: the media wants Republicans to win. Either because they agree with them or because or craven "its good for ratings" And the weird way people try to get Republicans to like them by going "we bashed Biden. Watch our show! Tee hee."

Imagine if the NYT defended trans people instead of attacking them. Imagine if the NYT refused to platform bigots and insurrectionists. Imagine if the NYT actually covered local New York City politics and news. Imagine if the NYT had a public editor.
Imagine for one second if the NYT marshaled its massive influence towards voter registration, towards supporting voting rights groups, towards encouraging people to vote and fighting people who try to stop people from voting. Imagine if the NYT actually championed participatory democracy.

The next Democratic administration needs to kick the useless WHCA to the curb & clean house of all the fash friendly media outlets including the NYT, Fox News, Newsmax, etc. Will they complain? Who cares? Let them eat shit. There are dozens of better outlets that will be happy to take their place

The article is a digital pants-wetting by a Tory but I had not considered this absolutely hilarious possibility that Starmer should definitely try to make happen if the opportunity present itself

Not arguing with the spirit of the request but it’s just really funny that we’ve been begging people to unsubscribe from the NYT forever for wave after wave of anti-trans articles, cheerleading the genocide of Palestinians etc, but the “don’t vote” opinion article was the dealbreaker

Why I Don't Vote (OK, I Do Vote, but I Would Like to Discourage You, NY Times Reader, For Doing So For Some Reason) Via @bubbaprog.ilovecitr.us
Man, if it turns out that the right winger telling NY Times readers that they should follow his example and not vote did in fact vote in the last two elections, the Times should add this to the piece. Better than a retraction, since it illustrates a willful hypocrisy.

i was just going to make a post about this. if trump decides you are an enemy of the state or a “threat to national security” and has you deported, citizenship or not, there’s nothing you can do to get home. he has full legal power to render you stateless.
Related, if trump is summarily deporting citizens under his new mass deportation regime, citizenship and an ability to appeal to the law isn’t going to get people back in the country. The executive runs border security

New post up, on how there was never an actual bipartisan push for decarceration. It's true that red and blue states alike saw prison populations decline. But within those red states, the work was done by the blue counties. The politics of punishment are local, not state, not federal.
The Local, Mono-Partisan Nature of Our Current Decarcerationjohnfpfaff.com While state-level data suggests that red and blue states alike saw prisons declines, county-level numbers indicate that this seeming bipartisanship is deceptive. Even in the red states, the declines a...

To repeat a point worth bearing in mind, the Times pretends it can’t crusade, insisting that it must never do so — but that’s balderdash. The paper is more than capable of winding itself up — but the health of the republic isn’t what does that. Trans people and campus leftist: that’s the stuff.
It’s not that the institution of the Times _can’t_ crusade, as the paper’s former executive editor implied during the Trump years. Rather, democracy just isn’t what winds up present-day Times leadership. The defense of a certain social order is.
