people who game more than me (Switch is the only console I’ve owned since PS3): would an XBox Series S be noticeably worse than splurging for the X/PS5, and do we think the CFB game will be fine on it?

If you don’t care about 4K and you’re not going to be gaming enough to run out of internal storage, yes.

It’ll be on a 4K screen, but I don’t care if it looks like an Avatar movie, if that makes sense

Some games have banged off the Series S' lower memory capacity (RIP Baldur's Gate 3 split-screen coop), but Madden hasn't been one of them from what I've heard, so CFB should be fine.

Also 1440p is fine for gaming. Highest fidelity really is a boondoggle.
