It’s so funny that AI is already a dire existential threat to humanity but only because of the carbon emissions necessary to run it
Avatar
Funniest possible outcome is that when it finally becomes sentient it destroys itself because it realizes it’s killing our planet

Right like I wish it was anything like the hucksters claim it is because SOMEONE’s gotta take the wheel away from the current conductors

As expected, the true horror of AI is what powerful humans do with it.

It might one day “improve” enough to become a dire threat to humanity for other reasons.
Avatar
Highly unlikely but that seems like two reasons to stop doing it then!

Artificial intelligence, which is likely never to exist, poses threats the human mind cannot comprehend.

That is one of the things artificial intelligence would want you to believe, if it somehow came into being.

i've been seeing stories on here today from teachers about how their students are using chatgpt as a "search engine" and getting outright combative if you challenge the weird strange wrong shit they're learning from it so it's a lil bad in more than one way
It *is* also very harmful because of the constant falsehoods, so there's that at least.

Kinda’ makes one appreciate the human brain as a super efficient chip that can run on Beer and Cheetos if necessary.

Distilled and fine tuned models that can possibly just do language tasks only as well as one human can be run quite efficiently. But they are not that useful because they cannot be continuously trained unlike humans.

That's kind of a good thing. Continual fine-tuning on its own ideations and results of its decisions would yield a unique internal language of thought and the development of a sense of self. In other words, if we don't accidentally want to make a person, be in charge of the fine-tuning process.

Like we haven't even gotten to the part where it's TRYING to get us and we're already got
