Maybe they should adopt the British electoral system. Then you have clear winners and losers, which sometimes matches how everyone voted.
Here's what's up right now on French TV: Lots of politicians are fighting, & it's complicated to figure out what's going on. This level of fragmentation in Parliament just has not happened under this constitutional regime, designed in 1958; this is unprecedented territory.

You never hear about Bonapartists any more these days do you

One crucial difference between the British and French far right is that the latter managed to find a leader who doesn't look like a boiled scrotum.

Whilst the Democrats have been fidgeting about Biden, the French Left show what can be done when you get your merde together.

I'm not saying French voters were energised by seeing Grant Shapps lose his seat but clearly they were.

The fun thing about stories like these is they seem twee and inconsequential but are potentially more serious than any of the political stuff dominating the headlines, given the possibility of collapsing ecosystems, food supplies, civilisation.
As if we didn't have enough environmental problems, now earthworm populations are crashing: in the U.K., down a third in the past 25 years. No one is sure why. Fun fact: 1 cubic meter of healthy soil has 1 km of worm tunnels. 🧪 www.economist.com/britain/2024...

One notable moment in the BBC election coverage was when they had the Reform guy in the studio. He said they had employed an agency to do background checks on candidates, but they let them down. Reminded me that ChangeUK (remember them?) said a similar thing when they had a few dodgy candidates.

On Monday the Telegraph will publish a bombshell poll showing the decline in support for Starmer.

Since Starmer became PM, British F1 drivers have qualified 1-2-3 at the British GP for the first time ever, and England have actually won a penalty shoot-out. Labour fixing things already.

Imagine how many more seats the Tories would have lost to Reform if England supporters had come home a week earlier.

Is all this "not a real landslide" guff an attempt to create a UK equivalent of the "2020 stolen election" theme? In which case it's a typically crass garbling, because all it leads to is demand for a proportional system, which will *definitely* lock out those old Thatcher-style Tory majorities.

The real lesson is that the old Liberal Party's decline in the 1929 election could have been avoided if Lloyd George had done more wacky water-based stunts.

Let's wait and see how many more votes Starmer gets on iPlayer.

Daring move by Starmer to appoint some ministers from outside Parliament, but I wouldn't have given DEFRA to Timmy Mallett.

How bitterly the Americans must envy the British system for dealing with incapable leaders, by getting them to call and lose early elections.

I think it's the right moment to declare I'm disillusioned with the Starmer government.

Did Paul Mason stand as a candidate anywhere? I lost track of that saga.
