re-watching this, & it applies SO well to AI shit too "both the claimed functionality and the actual functionality are bad. [...] the idea of it becoming the norm is terrible, but the prospect of what the world would look like if all the mythologizing and over-promising came true also super sucks."

There's a distinct overlap between the guys who thought their hideous ape piccrews would be valuable and the guys telling everyone artists are over because they can type into Midjourney

Oh man this is GOLD...(Also reminded me of when data science was the hot new thing now I don't hear about it as much)

it’s such a great video, I have rewatched it many times. His metaverse video is also really great too

It is very well argued, and gets to the wretched heart of the issue. It can be applied to so many of these "waves" as its the same grifters pushing it with the same insincere motivations yet we cant escape aaaaaa

I'm never more proud to be a Canadian than when Dan drops a video. It's dumb, but 🤷‍♀️

i'm BEGGING for dan olson to make an AI video already so he can single handedly collapse another techbro industry like he did with NFTs

He said he won't make it, but he shared some thoughts: x.com/FoldableHuma...

I've says as much longer ago. Most of the AI bros don't know this because most users are using it without cost, but media genetators are operating at huge losses and there really isn't a good way to make the tech cheaper. The tech doesn't make sense economically.

Oh yeah 100%. 'Not only is it not gonna work, but if it did it would suck too.'

This and his dead mall vid are among my absolute favorites to rewatch!!

He has a great point in his Dead Mall vid that applies here A tech fad’s definition is always vague enough that existing stuff gets bundled in, and can be used as a positive example of the New Thing

Because its a lot of the same peoples pushing for it, im affraid 🥲

I would be surprised if Dan Olson wasn't working on an AI essay.

We're in an accelerated timeline where there's a new virtual Beanie Babies craze every 2-5 years and I hate everything about it.

Big tech and every new thing it churns out to be excited over is just another scam to monopolize wealth and turn the medium rich into mega rich. All the while the people scrimp and eat beans to gaze lovingly into screens at whatever Tech creates that distracts us comfortably. Huxley was a seer.

I'll try to make time for this - I hate it how every sticker that I could read on the bus is now a video 😑
