Movie reviews, news and interviews since 2004. We particularly love the unusual and absurd – kung fu, giallo, Czech New Wave, etc.

OMAC (Jack f’in Kirby) - I’d read the first issue but finally read the whole series. Full-ass Kirby, for better and for worse. All concept, no character. But man that uninhibited sci-fi cray-cray … And nobody draws weirder fish.
Rai Book 1 (Dan Abnett and Juan Jose Ryp) - Really dig this, post-apocalyptic action and beautiful Darrow-influenced art from Ryp. Great update on the old Valiant material.

Old City Blues (Giannis Milonogiannis) - tribute to the era of Akira/Dominion/Patlabor/GitS, fun murder mysteries and mech police from @musashinoelegy.bsky.social with his lovely scratchy art.

#Watched Kill (2023) - starts as a passable Indian take on Under Siege 2 and then halfway through goes apeshit. I have quibbles - hated the score, the action choreography in the first half is weak, too much rank sentimentality. But when it gets going, what an mean-spirited vicious ride. #filmsky
Well this kinda rocked, more later

Ah, took up running again this spring and I just got back up to 5 miles at lunch. Taking advantage of nature’s sweat remover, my dog. Wife horrified.

Rereading some Ben Marra recently (OMWOT, Night Business) and I forgot that Night Business has what may be the greatest “About the Artist” photo and blurb of all time.

Crowd sourcing. Who is this supposed to be? Could be Stark but doesn’t look quite right to me.

And Raghav Juyal absolutely crushed it as the clever, nasty antagonist. Was not familiar with him, but he should be a star off the back of this.

Before Chinatown, Robert Towne wrote Tomb of Ligeia, The Last Woman on Earth (both directed by Roger Corman), and an excellent Outer Limits episode with Robert Duvall titled The Chameleon (that I just watched on Pluto yesterday). RIP.

Cover of THE MONSTER TIMES #7. Can't say I agree with the endorsement of Batman for president.

By the way, that third story felt like Emma Stone’s audition for a Fast and Furious movie. Happening when?
#Watched Kinds of Kindness (2024) - What even to make of this? Lanthimos, after two baroque and delightful period pieces, is back in full absurdist parable mode. I need to sleep on this but some random thoughts to follow.

I think at this point I’ve seen every “good” Argento (plus a decent amount of bad ones)? Holding out some slight hope that Trauma will prove worthwhile.
Another big plus I forgot to add: Asia making out with an animatronic fish

#Watched The Stendhal Syndrome (1996) - definitely going not have to revisit this transitional Argento, profoundly mixed feelings. Pluses: - The Morricone score - Argento’s surrealist depictions of the subjective worlds within art  - Young and beautiful Asia Argento and Thomas Kretschmann /1

Casual reminder that the Telugu language Indian scifi epic KALKI 2898 AD was one of this past weekend’s five highest grossing movies at the US box office, so why not read or re-read my review? www.rogerebert.com/reviews/kalk...

This most recent arc of Akane-banashi has been excellent, high drama - this whole series continues to be very very good.

Cube, if they’d put 1/8th the work into the script that they put into the production design.
I don't like who I am when I talk about Cube (1997). Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla deeply hurts me, but I don't know that I despise it. Tintorera just makes me fucking angry.

A good thing about being Gen X is we were promised the future would be dystopia and by God has it delivered.

Someone should do a list of repeat offenders. Seeing a lot of Gump popping up.

This is making me realize I’ve managed a perfect streak of watching zero movies with Jaden Smith. Go me!
