Superb essay. We have to get our thoughts disciplined enough that we can successfully build on material written 50 years ago, not just repeat it.

One frustration of mine is the amount of the green economy that focuses on electric cars. They’re a better alternative to gas, but they’re really just a half measure that preserves the status quo as much as possible. Life will have to be vastly different if we are going to survive.

Yes. Instilling disciplined thought has been on my mind, and since Bluesky isn't very big it's probably safe to try that here. Basically, people already know EVs are partial, or temporary, and the numbers can be worked out, as in the first report below: ukfires.org/impact/publi...

Even an inadequate response to climate change now involves impossible demands on institutions. That's explained here, cued up: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPDS... The logic: since we know institutions face challenges or even collapse either way, it's better that we change them.

The connecting thread is the important part. Almost every well-educated person with influence, from Gorz's essay in 1973 to UK FIRE's report Absolute Zero in 2019, has thrown these reports in the dustbin. That's the silver lining - the knowledge is there, now just to figure out the rejection.

And we already know a lot about the methods of rejection, too. pages.uoregon.edu/norgaard/pdf...

For anyone who has read this thread this far, here at the end you can stare right into the sun. Play play.half.earth, a game developed after a book by Drew Pendergrass and Troy Vettese. It's a pretty accurate picture of upcoming decades, whether the politics is realistic or not.
Half-Earth Socialism: The Gameplay.half.earth Play as a planetary planner and decide what we should do about the climate, biodiversity, and human welfare. Can you bring the world safely to a better place?

Given I've just posted Deadline 2020, then for admission to the Harvard Class of 2029, shouldn't play.half.earth be the entrance exam? Here's where the rest of Drew's class has gone to make their way in the world: features.thecrimson.com/2020/senior-...
