HEY HELP
you know how you say "My fellow Americans" or "My fellow writers"
is there a not-gendered word I can use there? I realize that it's supposedly gender neutral but I wish for a gender inclusive choice. did anyone ever coin something?
"Respected" but leave out "my."
"Respected writers, we are here today..."
Or go the "Friends, Romans, country[persons]" route. "Writers, artists, and others—it is so lovely to be here with you all."
Sometimes ya gotta carve out a new reality. We did that when we introduced "Ms." as a courtesy title. "Comrade" sounds too Russian Communist (for lack of better reference). That said, "Esteemed" is closer. "Contemporaries" or "compeers" works for me.
