The governors of a dozen Republican-led states — AL, AK, FL, GA, IA, MS, OK, SC, SD, TX, UT, WY — opted out of a new federal food assistance program, leaving about 9.5 million students without the aid this summer
This is always a good fucking question. However, it seems like a large number of people in this country would much rather see that many kids go hungry rather than let a single child, who may not *technically* need help, get something for free.
As I've gleaned from multiple arguments, conservatives tend to believe that children are solely the responsibility of their parents and that literally any assistance is a waste of public funds.
Not excusing it but what percentage of regular Republican voters have heard this story?
It's odd but lots of GOP voters have only a vague notion of what the party even does when elected.
A symptom of a brain dead, toxic, horse race dominated media environment.
They've been convinced of social Darwinism without realizing it, and giving assistance to those who need it removes their feeling that only the worthy live to see tomorrow (which takes away their delusion that they are 'worthy').
right? They'd rather have a shitty social safety net themselves to prevent whomever they are currently convinced are the "wrong people" from having access. It's infuriating.
There’s a great book on this called Dying of Whiteness. The people he interviews admit that expanding Medicaid would help them personally but they don’t want to see minorities and immigrants also benefit. Just too spiteful for their own good.
